What Type of Camera to use for Horse Barn & Pasture?

A number of my readers and YouTube viewers have seen the cameras I use to monitor my horses and fields when I’m away. And they have asked me for details on what type and brand of camera I use to see, and also video my horses and property. Lastly, they want to know how I’ve set it up. So here you go!

How to Use Barn & Pasture Security Cameras to Conduct Workshops or Sessions

If you do any kind of equine-assisted therapy, you can also use these cameras to support your sessions, or to help you facilitate group workshops:

1. Do a group call on your Zoom account.

2. SHARE SCREEN on your desktop or laptop – where you have the Reolink camera feed displayed on your screen. This way, people can see the horses at all times.

3. You are on the same zoom call as a separate caller on your cellphone. You can show your face, or you might choose to focus in on a particular horse. Meanwhile your ‘shared screen’ is showing the rest of the herd, so your client or workshop participants can see how the herd is responding. Or they can observe the herd dynamic, or how the horse is responding to you.

Why I Prefer Hardwired Cameras

I prefer to avoid EMR (electromagnetic radiation) for health reasons. I have blogged about the health consequences of this microwave technology for over a decade on my health blog, so I’m not going to repeat myself here (just click that link if you want more info/data).

My camera set up at the house (on the porch) is hardwired; using only ethernet cable and a power cord for the camera mounted on the outside of the house. I run an ethernet cable from the Starlink satellite dish (which is 350 feet away from the house) to bring Internet into the house.

For the camera down in the pole barn, there is a WiFi modem on the roof of the barn, but it then has a hardwired cable running to the router. And from the router there is an ethernet cable running to the camera. So WiFi is used, but minimized. The WiFi signal/radiation is not brought into the pole barn where I or the horses hang out.
