We Think you Should put the Hay Here — Really??

Observe a real-time communication between the herd and me. They’re asking for hay and I have an idea of where and how that should be done. But they have a different idea.

Guess whose idea is better?

I also discuss the various types of communication between the horses and me; from telepathic to body language. And show you how I choose to use the different types and also how fluid that can be.

Here’s another example of the horses changing my idea to a better one…

    Hi Jini 😀
I’m curious why the herd is not living off the land so they can be lean coming into the spring flush? I thought that was one of the hopes for the new large land? I know I haven’t been as tuned in so maybe I missed this ? I do realize it’s now summer but just curious about this? ✌🏼💚🐴

Yes that absolutely was the plan, HOWEVER… we have had 3 drought years in a row, plus the land is still balancing/healing itself, and we are figuring out what it needs to support that balancing process.

The result was that we headed into the winter with virtually nothing left to eat on the land. And a bunch of ‘land restoration’ plants that the horses cannot eat: cinquefoil (potentilla), burdock, hoary alyssum, hedge mustard, etc.

This summer I have 22 cows on here, hoping they will eat the species the horses cannot eat, and further contribute to the balancing of the land. So far, they are mostly eating the grasses! Guess all animals are the same – they’re gonna eat the nice stuff first. Makes sense. Which is why people do rotational grazing – so they’re forced to eat down everything before they’re let onto a new patch. I’m trying to avoid having to do that here… hoping if I can just get the density and mix of species right, that all can work in symbiosis. I guess we’ll see what happens!

Hope all is going well with your crew, family and neighbours! xox
