How to Get Skunk Smell off a Dog or Horse

Rick Bruno, a former police K9 handler, had a dog that was sprayed 3 times by skunks. By the third event, he had found the antidote to remove the terrible skunk smell.

Needless to say, make sure you carry out this treatment with your dog (or horse) secured in an area that is not going to be ruined by skunk smell!

Remedy to Remove Skunk Spray

  • 1 quart (4 cups) of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap (DAWN works best and is safe for animals)

Mix these ingredients in a bucket (do not dilute them!) and sponge them onto the dog.

Scrub it in as best you can, then rinse with tap water.

He carries these ingredients and a bucket with him in the car now. Great advice!

The Humane Society gives out the same formula to remove skunk smell. But they have a few other important instructions.

Important Instructions for Skunk Smell Removal

– wear rubber gloves
– avoid the eye area – do not get mixture in the eyes (if it happens, rinse with cool water)
– do NOT make up this mixture and store it anywhere as it could explode!
– if you get skunk smell on your clothes, you can remove it using your regular laundry soap combined with half a cup of baking soda

With 4 dogs at the ranch we have been SO fortunate that no one has been sprayed by a skunk. And the horses have never had an issue either. But I definitely want to keep this remedy on hand in case it does.

“Just want to second this one. My wife works at a vet’s office and this formula is what they tell people to use. She says the soap should be the Dawn brand, specifically; I don’t know why that would make a difference but apparently that’s what works the best, in the vet’s 40 years of experience. It worked for our dog, anyway. You have to really slather it on thickly and scrub well, and it’ll do the job.” – Ron Swartzendruber

Note: If your dog has rolled in rotting fish, or gotten into some engine oil or grease, here are instructions on how to clean oil or grease from your dog’s coat.
